Health and Social Care (Applied General)

Why choose this subject?

The Health and Social Care sector relates to the whole range of services that are available from health and social care providers. The vast infrastructure, both public and private, encompasses disciplines including sociology, psychology, medicine, law and ethics, as well as residential and other types of care.

The demand for qualified health care professionals has never been greater. The NHS and wider care services are changing at an unprecedented rate and we need to continue to respond to the developments in the health, social care and other related sectors effectively to ensure individuals are properly supported and cared for.


What will you study?

Year 12

  • Human lifespan development - Exploration of physical, intellectual, emotional and social development across the human lifespan, and the factors affecting development and the effects of ageing. This includes the study of various social and psychological theories and how they inform the health and social care sector.
  • Principals of Health and Social Care Practice - Students focus on the principles that underpin meeting the care and support needs of individuals, which are the foundation of all services within health and social care.

Year 13

  • Human Biology and Health - Explore the organisation, structure and normal physiological functioning of the human body, and the effect on health of common disorders of the body systems.
  • Promoting Health Education - Students explore the purpose of health education, models and approaches to educating the public and encouraging behaviour change in the population.

How is this course assessed?

Year 1: The course consists of one externally and one internally assessed unit. The subject content includes study of Human Lifespan Development (external exam) and Principals of Health and Social Care Practice (internal coursework) with students considering a range of scenarios and case studies.

Year 2: A further externally assessed unit along with another internal unit with content including Human Biology and Health (external exam) and optional content (internal coursework) possibly including health policy and wellbeing, promoting health education, safe environments in health and social care and health sciences. This is, again, approached through consideration of a range of scenarios and case studies.


Health & Social Care Intent

At Immanuel we believe that students deserve a curriculum that prepares them for career pathways in a variety of vocational areas, providing them with the knowledge and skills within Health and Social Care that can then be transferred into a variety of environments9.  Our curriculum will ensure that all our students will have the opportunity to:

  • Development of key skills that prove your aptitude in health and social care such as interpreting data to assess an individual’s health.
  • Process that underpins effective ways of working in health and social care, such as designing a plan to improve an individual’s health and wellbeing.7
  • Attitudes that are considered most important in health and social care, including the care values that are vitally important in the sector, and the opportunity to practise applying them.
  • Knowledge that underpins effective use of skills, process and attitudes in the sector such as human growth and development, health and social care services, and factors affecting people’s health and wellbeing.
  • The development of core knowledge and understanding of human growth and development, how people deal with major life events, health, and social care services.
  • The development and application of skills such as: practical demonstration of care values, together with the ability to reflect on own performance.8
  • Reflective practice through the development of skills and techniques that allow learners to respond to feedback and identify areas for improvement using relevant presentation techniques.

What next?

Not only could a BTEC in Health and Social Care lead onto a career within the social care sector, it will also develop a range of skills in a vocational context including confidence, communication, team building and motivation. As well as these transferrable skills it will also provide UCAS points towards university entry.
