GCSE Geography Field Trip to Idle and Grassington

Recently, the GCSE Geography students went on a field trip to Idle and Grassington to investigate how places change over time. The trip allowed us to carry out real geographical research and practise fieldwork techniques that we use in our GCSE studies.

Our first stop was Idle, where we conducted a land use survey to record the different types of buildings and services in the area. We also carried out questionnaires with members of the public to find out where they travel for shopping and other services. This helped us understand Idle’s sphere of influence and how far people rely on the area for everyday needs.

Later, we travelled to Grassington, a village in the Yorkshire Dales. Here we repeated the land use survey and questionnaires to compare the results with those from Idle. This allowed us to see how a Honeypot tourist destination differs from a suburban settlement, and how these places have changed over time.

The data we collected will help us analyse patterns of land use and understand how the sphere of influence varies between different settlements. The trip was both interesting and useful, giving us valuable experience of fieldwork and helping us apply what we have learned in the classroom.
